Jeju Island Travel Guide 2026: Where to Stay, How Many Days & The 4 Regions Explained for First-Time Visitors
Planning a trip to Jeju Island? This Jeju Island travel guide breaks down the island into 4 regions, where to stay, how many days you need, and how to plan your itinerary without wasting time commuting across the island.
Jeju is HUGE, and choosing the wrong base or route can cause back tracking. This guide will help you group your trip by region so you can explore more and travel less.
Jeju Cheat Sheet (First-Time Visitors)
- 3 days (no car) → Stay in North Jeju + 1 East day trip (what I did during my 1st trip to Jeju!)
- 5–7 days (with car) → Explore all 4 regions
- Best area to stay → North (convenient), West (scenic), South (nature)
- Do you need a car? → Not for short trips in North Jeju, yes for full exploration
Where is Jeju?

Jeju Island is south of Korea and a 1.5 hour flight away from Seoul. It’s the Hawaii of Korea, known for gorgeous beaches, volcanic landscapes, and breathtaking nature that make you feel so small.
How to Get to Jeju?
The easiest way to get to Jeju Island is by flying.
- From Seoul → 1.5 hour flight
- From Busan → 1 hour flight
- From Japan → around 2–3 hours
Flights are frequent and often affordable, making it the most practical option. There are ferries available from mainland Korea, but they take significantly longer and are not recommended for short trips.
How Big is Jeju, Really?
Jeju is Korea’s largest island and is about 3 times the size of Seoul, which is why planning by region is so important.
Jeju is known for its 4 distinct regions:
- North – the main city hub
- East – volcanic nature and marine culture
- South – waterfalls and the island’s second city
- West – beaches, flowers, & tea fields

This is so important so you can group your trip by region instead of hopping across the island!
The 4 Jeju Regions
North Jeju: What to Do & Who It’s Best For
Northern Jeju is the main city center of the island and home to the airport. It’s the most convenient place to stay, so it’s the best area to stay in Jeju for first-time visitors.

The region has local markets, seaside walking paths, and the most life-changing museum ever at Nohyeong Supermarket (if you’re into anime, video games, fantasy), making it easy to explore even without renting a car.
Best for: first-time visitors, short trips, travellers without a car
During my first Jeju trip, we did not have a car so we explored Northern Jeju with public transportation, took a taxi to do coastal walks, and booked a 1 day tour to see East Jeju.
North Jeju is best if you’re visiting for 3 days or fewer, or attending a seasonal festival like Waterbomb.
Quick tip: Make sure you set up Kakao Taxi beforehand so you can call for a taxi without needed to rely on restaurants to call for you!
Top Attractions in Northern Jeju include:
- Dongmun Traditional Market – Bustling local market known for street food, fresh seafood, and souvenirs
- Yongduam Rock – Coastal rock formation shaped like a dragon’s head overlooking the sea
- Iho Tewoo Horse Lighthouses – Unique red and white lighthouses shaped like horses by the beach
- Rainbow Coastal Road – Scenic seaside road lined with colorful painted blocks, great photos spot
- Nohyeong Supermarket – HUGE immersive media art exhibition space (My favourite)
- Arte Museum Jeju – Large immersive digital art museum with themed light and sound exhibits
- Aewol Cafe Street – Coastal strip filled with stylish cafes and ocean views
- Dakmeoru Coast – Quiet coastal spot known for dramatic cliffs and sunset views
East Jeju: What to Do & Who It’s Best For
East Jeju is home to some of the most iconic landscapes on the island.
Here you’ll find dramatic volcanic formations at Sunrise Peak, one of the longest lava tubes in the world, and the unique Haenyeo diving culture, where women, the age of your grandma, free-dive to harvest seafood.

Best for: iconic Jeju landscapes, sunrise hikes, cultural experiences, UNESCO sites.
One important warning, getting around East Jeju without a car is genuinely difficult. Public transport runs infrequently, and waiting times can eat into your day fast.
My recommendation? Book a guided day tour.
During my 1st trip to Jeju, I stayed in Jeju City and took a day tour to East Jeju because I couldn’t drive.

And even if I could, who knows if we’d make it back without getting lost hahaha. I needed to make sure we had a guaranteed way back to the hotel. It’s definitely great for a day trip and all the popular attractions are clustered here!
Top Attractions in East Jeju:
- Manjanggul Cave – One of the world’s longest lava tubes with impressive rock formations
- Seongsan Ilchulbong – Iconic volcanic crater known for sunrise views and coastal scenery
- Jeju Folk Village – Open-air museum showcasing traditional Jeju homes and local culture
- Jeju Haenyeo – Legendary female free divers who harvest seafood without oxygen tanks
- Snoopy Garden – Peanuts-themed garden with cute exhibits and walking paths
- Jeju Stone Park – Park dedicated to Jeju’s volcanic stones, myths, and heritage
- Seopjikoji – Scenic coastal area with cliffs, fields, and ocean views
- Sangumburi – Unique grass-covered volcanic crater with walking trails and panoramic views
South Jeju: What to Do & Who It’s Best For
South Jeju is mostly known as Seogwipo, the 2nd biggest city in Jeju. Perfect if you’re drawn to waterfalls, coastal cliffs, and a slower coastal city atmosphere.

There’s a good mix of natural landmarks and cultural spots here, and it pairs naturally with West Jeju if you have a car.
Best for: nature lovers, waterfall chasers, travellers with a car
On my second trip, we based ourselves in the west and used a chartered taxi to cover most of South Jeju in a day. One of the best decisions we made. It felt efficient without feeling rushed.

If you’re going during the summer, bring BUG SPRAY!!! I was eaten alive by mosquitoes at Cheonjeyon Waterfalls!!
Top attractions in South Jeju:
- Jeongbang Waterfall – One of the few waterfalls in Asia that flows directly into the ocean
- Jusangjeolli Cliff – Dramatic hexagonal rock pillars formed by cooled lava along the coast
- Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market – Lively traditional market known for street food and local snacks
- Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls – Multi-tiered waterfalls surrounded by lush forest and walking paths
- Alive Museum Jeju – Interactive museum with optical illusions and 3D photo spots
- Yakcheonsa – One of the largest Buddhist temples in Asia with ornate architecture and ocean views
West Jeju: What to Do & Who It’s Best For
West Jeju is amazing for beaches, flowers, and tea fields. This side of the island moves slower. You might wander through camellia gardens, sip tea while overlooking green tea fields, or lounge on a white sand beach without being rushed.

Best for: beach lovers, slow travellers, photographers, couples
Make sure you dress nicely, there are many beautiful photo opportunities here.

Top attractions in West Jeju:
- Hyeopjae Beach – Famous for its clear turquoise water and white sand with views of Biyangdo Island
- Geumneung Beach – Calm, shallow beach ideal for swimming and relaxing
- Sinchang Windmill Coastal Road – Scenic coastal drive lined with wind turbines and ocean views
- Osulloc Tea Museum – Popular museum and cafe showcasing Korea’s green tea culture and products
- Camellia Hill – Beautiful botanical garden known for seasonal camellia blooms and photo spots

Do You Need a Car in Jeju Island?
This will depend on what you want to do!

- No car → If you’re staying in North Jeju for 3 days. You can rely on public transportation or taxis.
- No car → If your main goal is to relax at beaches at West Jeju, you can get around with public buses and taxis as long as you stay near the beaches and local areas.
- Yes car → If you’re visiting East, West, or South Jeju, the best way to get around is by renting a car, getting a private driver, or joining a tour for convenience. The attractions are far in distance, so to save time, I highly recommend travelling in a vehicle.
The bottom line is if you’re sightseeing to see multiple nature spots, UNESCO world heritage sites, the best way is to travel with a car or with a tour. Read my full guide on getting around Jeju without a car!!

What to Eat in Jeju (Must-Try Local Food)
You cannot leave Jeju without eating black pork and seafood here! You’re in a coastal city so it’s mandatory! To be honest I couldn’t tell the difference between black pork and regular pork. But it’s supposed to be chewier and more rich in flavour! Here are some foods you must try in Jeju before you leave!
- Jeju Black Pork (Heuk-dwaeji) – Premium local pork known for its rich flavor, chewy texture, and grilled BBQ style

Stick to North and East Jeju. Both are manageable without a rental, especially if you supplement with taxis or a day tour for the east. - Have a car, 5+ days →

Is Jeju Island Worth Visiting?
If you like nature, beaches, hiking, or island getaways for some slow-paced living, you will absolutely love Jeju! It’s a gorgeous volcanic and coastal city that’s totally different from Seoul or Busan! I wasn’t even expecting to see palm trees in Jeju!! Also if you want a change of scenery from the hustling and bustling of Seoul, Jeju is a totally different vibe.

If you’re a city lover and like fast activities, Jeju might be too slow for you and you might not get the full Jeju experience with the chop chop chop mindset. Which is totally fair too.
After my 2nd Jeju trip, I actually found myself loving the museums here even more than the nature, which is ironic haha. I visited Nohyeong Supermarket TWICE, and disclaimer this is not a REAL supermarket, it’s actually a 20-meter indoor immersive light and media art exhibition. And something I’ll add to my list of places that almost made me cry because it was so beautiful. Arte Museum Jeju is 2nd place in jaw dropping media art exhibitions that make dreams into reality.

Jeju is filled with wonders and mysteries. It’s a place you can’t rush. So with this Jeju Guide, I hope you can plan your adventure and have the best trip!
